Sorry I’ve been down a while.  The page was slammed with over 250 spams.

I’d like to make this a spot for the high school athletes to come on, make comments about their games, their opponents (nicely or constructive!) academics, NCAA rules or whatever your thoughts are.  If anyone, parents, students or fans, would like to start their own topic, just email it to me and Ill make it your very own topic with or without your name as you prefer.  Editing is at my discretion.

So I went to Arizona a couple weeks ago to help Kevin move into his new apartment.  Hes moving in with a kid who went to Mid Pac.  While I was there I had the opportunity to visit with Bryson Beirne, Kaniela Tuipolotu, Mana Mikaele and Brandyn McCall after practice.  LeeAnn and Kimo Beirne were there as well. They all looked great and were having a great time.  Kaniela is projected to get “plenty of playing time”, Mana is out there is full force and Bryson is just going to have to be a little patient, which Im sure is difficult, knowing he just wants to get out there and play.  But as a freshman behind Willie Tuitama, patience is a virtue.  But Bryson was throwing well and the coaches comments were great.  Brandyn unfortunately pulled himself out of football for his final year due to a long standing injury he cant seem to overcome, but he’ll be out there coaching the TE’s with the Wildcats staff.  Could be a new opportunity for him.

For most of us, it is no surprise that Solomon Koehler of Castle High is listed among the Nations Top 100, even Rivals.com has him there. But having him ranked as the #4 Defensive Tackle in the nation may have come as something of a surprise even to those of us who know he has the ability.He is the highest ranked Hawaii Athlete on the list. Not to far behind is Saint Louis Schools own Geordon Hanohano, listed as the #16 Defensive Tackle in the Nation. Both are listed as four star atheltes, an honor rarely given to Hawaii athletes due to lack of exposure. However, with Scout.com being at the PIAA Evaluation Camp in May, more athletes than ever have made the Top 100, with four earning four stars, including Haku Correa, Damien DE listed at #23 in the Nation and Benji Kemoeatu, Kahuku, listed as the #10 OG in the country. Other athletes on the list (all ranked with three stars) include: Mykenna Ikehara, Kamehameha OG at #26; Shiloah Te’o, Safety out of Kahuku at #35; Tui Tuiasosopo, Saint Louis, at #35 OG and Baldwin OG Sean Tesoro at #38. Congratulations to all these young men.

Hey everyone, last week in July PIAA will be supporting Rich Miano and his Hawaii Speed & Quickness with their first ever Football Camp.  PIAA will be promoting and organizing this event on behalf of HS&Q.   This is the first time in about seven years the University of Hawaii Coaches are getting together for a football camp, all in one place at one time!  The event will be held at UH.   The camp will run for the 8-12th graders from July 24-28th, and for the youngsters K - 7th grade, July 25 - 28. June Jones will be in attendance on the 24th and 25th.  I’m excited - another great camp in Hawaii.  If you have ever even had a dream about playing for UH, come to this camp!  Every UH coach working with his position group, one on one! 

Hey everyone, thanks for attending. It was a great day and we had some excellent comments from coaches not only about the camp but the quality of the athletes here in Hawaii!  Head Coach Karl Dorrell said he’s personally coming back next year. Ron Powlus said he’s going to get Head Coach Charlie Weiss down here for next - he didnt realize there was this much talent here.    I didnt think without the timing events it would be such a big hit, but we had more coaches than ever checking out our athletes, over 30 in all.

Thanks to Chris Kidawski, Paul Lutu-Carroll and Devon Bess for their expertise in running the mini combine today.  As most of you know, NCAA D1 college coaches may no longer attend combines or any other testing events, so in order to have colleges in attendance we had to cut out timed events for the May 19 camp to accommodated coaches and be in compliance with the NCAA. 

About 90 athletes showed today, including several from neighbor islands, to have their times measured.  The morning went smoothly and now everyone is prepared to show their strengths to the college coaches on the 19th.  Thanks again to Chris, Paul and Devon and to Coach Say from Aiea for all his support.

PIAA Camp May 19

Seems as if the NCAA is trying to make recruiting more difficult by the minute. With the August 2006 ruling that Division 1/1AA coaches could no longer attend Football combines or any event where testing is going to take place, then adding in that colleges may no longer purchase video of these events, the NCAA is has now taken away text messaging.

Text messaging is one of the few ways colleges are currently allowed to contact players during quite or dead periods for seniors or prior to May of their junior season. The only other way is via snail mail. Effective August 1, text messaging is gone.  What are your thoughts?

Defensive Tackles Solomon Koehler (6′2, 300) of Castle High School and Haku Correa (6′1, 240) of Damien Memorial H.S. were the only two Hawaii athletes named to the Class of 2008 Rivals.com Top 250 Football Players to Watch. After speaking with their parents, Solomons dad said “thank you” and “he’s working hard on his 40 speed, training daily”. Lani Correa had no idea her son had received the honor and was at a loss for words, but very happy for him. The entire list can be seen: Top 250 to Watch-Class of 2008

Immediately following his performance at the NIKE Combine in Oakland, Solomon was moved up to the Rivals.com Top 100.

NIKE Combine in Oakland (Calif.) this past weekend. In fact, the talented athlete looks like the top player in the state for the class of 2008.
